GOTS Certification Explained — What It Means for Your Fashion Brand
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It is the world's leading certification for organic textiles. If your fashion brand wants to use the word "organic" on your garments or marketing in the EU, UK, or USA, you need GOTS-certified production.
What Does GOTS Certification Mean?
GOTS certifies the entire production chain of an organic textile — from raw cotton farm to finished garment. Ecological criteria: prohibits toxic dyes, bleaches, chemicals. Requires wastewater treatment. Bans hazardous substances. Social criteria: requires fair wages, safe working conditions, no child or forced labor, right to collective bargaining.
Why Does GOTS Matter?
Legal requirements: EU requires certification for organic claims. Retailer requirements: major retailers like H&M, ASOS, Next require GOTS for organic lines. Consumer trust: eco-conscious consumers check for GOTS certification before buying.
GOTS vs OEKO-TEX
GOTS certifies the entire organic supply chain — fiber origin, processing, labor. OEKO-TEX tests finished garments for harmful substances. OEKO-TEX does not certify organic fiber. For organic claims, GOTS is required. For safety claims, OEKO-TEX is sufficient.
How to Verify GOTS
Verify at GOTS.org using certificate number or factory name. Never accept certificates without verification. Fake or expired certificates exist. You receive a Transaction Certificate (TC) for your specific order — this is your proof of GOTS certification for retailers and regulators.
What Does GOTS Cost?
Organic cotton costs 20-40% more than conventional. Certification adds cost through audits and fees. Price premium for brands is typically 15-30% above conventional. A $3.50 conventional t-shirt might cost $4.20-4.50 GOTS organic.
Which Markets Require GOTS?
EU: Ecodesign regulation makes GOTS important for organic claims.
UK: Retailers require GOTS for organic ranges. ASA requires substantiated proof.
USA: GOTS is recognized as the credible organic textile standard.
Australia: ACCC requires substantiated proof for organic claims.
How to Order GOTS Garments
Confirm factory holds current GOTS certificate (verify on GOTS.org). Specify GOTS organic fabric in your order. Factory sources from certified mills with tracked certification. You receive Transaction Certificate for your order — this is your legal documentation for organic claims.
GOTS vs OCS
OCS certifies organic fiber content only. GOTS covers entire production chain and includes social criteria. GOTS is more rigorous and carries more credibility. For retailer and regulator organic claims, GOTS is the stronger choice.
