How to Avoid Clothing Manufacturer Scams in 2026

Scammers target new fashion brands. They promise low prices and fast delivery. They take your deposit and disappear. This guide explains common scam patterns, how to verify legitimacy, and red flags to watch for.

Common Scam Patterns

The most common scam is the deposit scam. A factory quotes an unusually low price. They demand 50-100% upfront payment. After receiving payment, they stop responding. Your money is gone.

Another common scam is the sample scam. They charge high sample fees. They never send samples. Or they send poor quality samples that do not match your design.

The bait-and-switch scam involves showing good samples but delivering poor quality bulk. They hope you accept the shipment because you need the goods urgently.

The ghost factory scam involves fake websites and addresses. They claim to be a legitimate factory but have no actual production capacity.

How to Verify Legitimacy

Request current certification certificates. Ask for GOTS, BSCI, ISO 9001, or OEKO-TEX certificates. Verify these certificates with the issuing organization. Scammers often use fake or expired certificates.

Ask for references from current clients. Contact these references. Ask about their experience, quality, and reliability. Scammers cannot provide verifiable references.

Request a factory video or virtual tour. Legitimate factories are proud of their facilities. They will show you production lines, equipment, and quality control processes.

Check the factory address on Google Maps. Verify the address exists. Look for satellite imagery of the facility. If the address is a residential area or empty lot, it is likely a scam.

Certificate Verification

GOTS certificates can be verified on the GOTS public database. Enter the certificate number. Check that it is current and valid for the company name.

BSCI certificates can be verified through the BSCI platform. Check that the factory is listed and certified. Verify the certification date.

ISO 9001 certificates can be verified through the issuing certification body. Check that the certificate number is valid and current.

OEKO-TEX certificates can be verified on the OEKO-TEX website. Enter the certificate number. Check that it is valid for the product category.

Payment Safety

Never pay 100% upfront. This is the biggest red flag. Legitimate manufacturers require 30-50% deposit, not full payment before production.

Use secure payment methods. Bank transfers are common but offer no protection. Consider using an escrow service for first-time orders. Escrow holds payment until you receive and approve goods.

For large orders, use a letter of credit. Your bank guarantees payment when conditions are met. This protects both buyer and seller.

Never pay to personal bank accounts. Legitimate manufacturers have business accounts. Payments to personal accounts are a major red flag.

Red Flags to Watch For

Unusually low prices are a red flag. If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Compare quotes with other manufacturers. If one quote is significantly lower, ask why.

Poor communication is a red flag. If they take days to respond to emails, they will take weeks to resolve problems. Good manufacturers respond within 24 hours.

Vague answers to questions are suspicious. Legitimate manufacturers provide detailed information. Scammers give generic responses and avoid specific details.

No physical address is a major red flag. Every legitimate factory has a physical address. If they only provide a PO box or no address, do not work with them.

Pressure to pay quickly is suspicious. Scammers want your money before you have time to verify them. Legitimate manufacturers allow time for due diligence.

Website Verification

Check when the website was registered. Use domain lookup tools. New websites are more suspicious. Established factories have websites that are several years old.

Check for copied content. Scammers often copy content from legitimate websites. Use image search to check if product photos are stolen from other sites.

Check contact information. Legitimate manufacturers have phone numbers, email addresses, and physical addresses. Scammers often only have web forms or generic email addresses.

Check for social media presence. Legitimate factories often have LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram profiles. Scammers rarely have established social media presence.

Trade Show Verification

Check if the manufacturer attends trade shows. Trade shows like MAGIC in Las Vegas, Première Vision in Paris, and Canton Fair in China are where legitimate factories showcase.

Search for the company name in trade show exhibitor lists. If they claim to attend major shows but are not listed, this is suspicious.

SDF Clothing attends major trade shows. We meet clients face-to-face. This builds trust and demonstrates our legitimacy.

Government Registration

Request the manufacturer's business registration number. Verify this with the government registry. In Bangladesh, check the RJSC registry for company registration.

Check export license. Legitimate manufacturers have export licenses from their government. Ask for a copy and verify with the issuing authority.

SDF Clothing is registered with the Bangladesh government. We have export licenses and can provide registration documents on request.

Third-Party Verification

Hire a local verification company. They can visit the factory, verify capacity, and provide a report. This costs money but provides assurance.

Use sourcing agents in the country. They have local knowledge and can verify factories. They charge a commission but reduce risk.

For Bangladesh, contact the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). They can verify if a factory is a legitimate member.

What to Do If Scammed

If you have been scammed, contact your bank immediately. Request a chargeback if possible. Report the scam to local authorities.

Report the scam to online platforms where you found the manufacturer. This helps protect other buyers.

Document everything. Keep emails, payment receipts, and communication records. This helps with any investigation or legal action.

Learn from the experience. Use the verification steps in this guide for future manufacturers. Due diligence prevents most scams.
