Building a Long-Term Wholesale Manufacturing Partnership
A single wholesale order and a long-term manufacturing partnership are different things. The first is about price and MOQ; the second is about payment terms, consistent quality across repeat runs, and a factory that treats your account as worth keeping. This guide covers what changes once you move from a one-off order to an ongoing relationship.
What Is Wholesale Clothing Manufacturing?
Wholesale manufacturing is when a brand or retailer orders garments in bulk directly from the factory. You are the importer and handle shipping, import duty, and customs clearance. The factory provides export documentation. Wholesale is different from buying from a marketplace — you control everything from fabric to label.
Wholesale Pricing
Basic t-shirt (180gsm): $2.80-4.00 per piece
Polo shirt (220gsm): $4.50-6.50 per piece
Hoodie (380gsm): $7.00-11.00 per piece
Dress shirt (poplin): $5.50-8.50 per piece
Denim jeans (10oz): $8.00-14.00 per piece
Bomber jacket: $12.00-20.00 per piece
MOQ for Wholesale Orders
Small factories: 300-500 pieces. Mid-size: 500-1,000 pieces. Large: 3,000-10,000 pieces. For most wholesale buyers, the 300-1,000 piece range offers the best combination of price and flexibility.
Payment Terms
Standard: 30% to start sampling, 40% when production starts, 30% balance before shipment. Alternative for established buyers: letter of credit (L/C) for large orders. Never pay 100% upfront to a factory you have not worked with before.
Quality Control
Three stages: pre-production (sample approval), during production (in-line inspection), final inspection (AQL 2.5 standard). For orders above 1,000 pieces or new factories, third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek is recommended.
Wholesale Shipping
To UK (Felixstowe): 22-27 days
To Germany (Hamburg): 20-25 days
To USA (Los Angeles): 25-30 days
To Australia (Melbourne): 28-35 days
To Canada (Vancouver): 28-32 days
Import Duty
EU buyers: zero duty under EBA. UK buyers: zero under UK DCTS. USA buyers: 16-17% duty. Australia: 0% under DFQF. Canada: 0% duty-free under LDCT/GPT+ preference (secured through 2034).
Building Long-Term Relationships
Pay on time. Provide clear feedback after each order. Give advance notice of upcoming orders. Consolidate styles. Visit your factory.
